Since trying to actively start writing again after a long start of summer hiatus, blogging juices have slowly but surely begun to flow again. Part of the reason I have been MIA, was my new found love for Grey’s Anatomy. As someone who appreciates the power of words, I have come to love and look forward to Meredith’s monologues of life lessons that begin and end each episode. In the forever tumultuous yet addicting romance between Dr. Grey and McDreamy, she voices some valuable advice about life and relationships, and heartbreak and triumph.
One of my favorite lines I’ve heard thus far, was this: “Some of us say we’d rather have something than absolutely nothing, but the truth is, having halfway is harder than not having it at all.” And in so many aspects of life, this concept seems to ring true. Maybe not in all, but in many. For example, I would rather eat a whole piece of cake than half of one, but I would rather go on half of a run than a whole one. Well, I really don’t want to run at all. I don’t even want to jog. To be honest sometimes, I don’t even want to walk to the refrigerator to get the cake whether it be a half or whole piece, but you get the picture. In the chocolaty, fudgy, delicious cake of life, we would rather have the entire piece than half of one. And sometimes, having no cake at all is worse than having half, because you are only tempting yourself to have more. We all know the feeling of having that weak instant where we wish we had never met someone or never done something. We wish we could erase the entire existence of a person or thing or situation because somehow all of the happy times were not worth the sadness you’re stuck with if something ends badly.
Too often, the question of life is not if, it is when. Because as sad as the fact is, it is rare that anything in life is not temporary. Few things, if any, last forever. So that’s why it’s important to eat the whole piece of cake. Doing things halfway is just as satisfying as not doing them at all. A hard but valuable life experience is that having something halfway is not having it at all, because if you only have half of it, chances are it probably won’t be yours in the end. I am a true believer in karma, and what goes around comes around. Don’t waste your energy on halfway things, save it for the one thing that will set your soul on fire. Don’t waste the calories on an unsatisfying sliver, because before you know it, the cake will be stale, the dessert will be gone, and the fat jeans will still be in your closet.
